Special Request

My dad is a proud retired military veteran and I am a proud military brat. My dad served three years as a Marine and then seventeen in the Air Force before he retired after his twenty years of service to our country. Anyone who knows my dad knows that his family is the most important thing to him. My mom and us girls are one of the reasons he moved from the Marines to the Air Force. The Air Force was easier to navigate with dependents from his perspective.

As my dad has been watching me learn about stained glass and glass art he has had questions about the process and what I have been working on but during my last trip back to South Dakota to work on my future glass shop house I was surprised to get a request from him for a glass art piece. I hadn’t realized he was so interested and my dad rarely asks for anything from anyone. I, of course, said I would absolutely make him a glass piece and I asked him if he had any idea of what he wanted. He had clearly been thinking about it because he immediately responded that he would like the Marines emblem.

The timing of his request was perfect as I recently learned glass painting and that has opened up my ability to do some of the more intricate pieces that I would like to do. Cutting the detailed eagle, rope, globe & anchor would be tough in glass. I could find some freeze & fuse options or a work around but now that I know glass painting I can simplify the design just a bit but still come close to the emblem as it is pictured below. As I have another important previous Marine in my life I will be able to make this a couple times and use the pattern more than once so I am excited to work on this and give my dad a truly meaningful gift.

I will post the process once I begin to work on this piece. I am so eager to get started but I am temporarily on hold for any glass art as I work to get my house in South Dakota ready, but that is a whole other story!
